Why photographers pick it
85mm is the focal length portrait photographers keep coming back to. It compresses the background just enough to keep faces natural, and it lets you work at a comfortable distance instead of crowding your subject.
At f/1.8 the background melts away and city lights turn into round highlights – 11 rounded aperture blades keep them round as you stop down. The same aperture buys you two to three stops of shutter speed once the sun is gone.
Wide open is usable, not a compromise: eyelashes and fabric texture hold up at f/1.8, so you can shoot at maximum aperture because you want that look – not stop down because you have to.
An optimised STM stepping motor drives the focus group. It supports your camera's face and eye detection, and it is quiet enough that the internal microphone does not pick it up during video.
A minimum focusing distance of 0.8 m is close enough for tight head-and-shoulders framing and for detail shots of food, objects or a cat that will not sit still.
At around 332 g in a reinforced fibreglass composite body, it is the 85mm you actually take with you – not the one that stays in the bag at home.
Twelve elements in eight groups, including two ED elements against colour fringing and two high-index elements that keep the barrel short. The result is neutral colour and sharpness that holds from the centre out to the edge.
Deliberately reduced. There is no focus ring and no aperture ring on the barrel – everything is set from the camera. Nothing gets nudged out of position in your bag, and there is nothing to learn before your first shot. The smooth barrel has also made the Neo a favourite base for stickers, custom paint and 3D-printed accessories.

Frequently asked questions
Does it really have no focus ring?
Correct – that is the point of the Neo. Focus is handled entirely by the autofocus, controlled from the camera. If you regularly focus manually, choose a lens with a focus ring instead.
How do I set the aperture?
Electronically, from the camera – exactly like a modern native lens. All EXIF data is transferred.
Does eye autofocus work?
Yes. The lens supports the face and eye detection of your camera.
Can I use it on an APS-C body?
Yes. On Sony E or Nikon Z APS-C cameras the field of view corresponds to roughly 127 mm – a long portrait lens.
Which filters fit?
Standard 62 mm screw-in filters. A lens hood is included.
