130 degrees — and still straight lines

At 10 mm on a full frame sensor the LAOWA 10mm f/2.8 Zero-D FF covers a 130.4° field of view. That is considerably more than conventional ultra wide angle lenses offer, and it changes the visual language: foreground and background are pushed dramatically apart, tight interiors open up, and landscapes gain a sense of depth that simply cannot be reproduced with longer focal lengths.

What makes it unusual is the Zero-D design. Venus Optics corrects rectilinear distortion to the point where straight edges stay straight even at the frame borders. For architecture and interior work this means window frames, door lintels and facade lines need no corrective transformation in post — one step less, and more importantly no loss of resolution in the corners caused by software correction.

14 aperture blades: round bokeh, 14-point sunstars

The 14-blade diaphragm gives this version its name, and it has two consequences. First, the aperture opening stays almost perfectly circular when stopping down, so out-of-focus highlights are rendered smoothly and evenly instead of showing polygonal edges. Second, an even number of blades produces exactly as many sunstar rays as there are blades: 14 fine, cleanly separated rays around every point light source.

In practice this is a creative tool above all during the blue hour, in night scenes with street lighting and in backlit situations with a low sun. The rays begin to form cleanly from around f/8 and are most pronounced between f/11 and f/16.

Ideal for

🏕 Landscape

Sweeping vistas with a powerful foreground and natural depth.

🏢 Architecture & interiors

Straight lines without software correction, even in cramped rooms.

🌌 Astrophotography

f/2.8 across the whole frame, ideal for the Milky Way and aurorae.

🗺 Panorama

Fewer rows for full spherical panoramas thanks to the extreme coverage.

Optical design

15 elements in 9 groups, including two aspherical and three ED elements. The aspherical surfaces take care of spherical aberration and field curvature — both of which would otherwise soften the corners at such a short focal length. The low-dispersion ED glass keeps longitudinal and lateral chromatic aberration in check, so hard contrast edges such as bare branches against a bright sky stay free of colour fringing. The front element is curved but shallow enough to accept a conventional 77 mm screw-in filter, which is far from a given at a 130° field of view and a real advantage over lenses that require expensive rectangular filter holders.

Manufacturer data from Venus Optics

Venus Optics lists the 10mm f/2.8 Zero-D FF as the world’s first rectilinear ultra-wide lens combining a 10 mm focal length with an f/2.8 aperture on full frame. The official angle of view is 130.4°, achieved with an optical design of 15 elements in 9 groups including 2 aspherical elements and 3 ED glass elements. According to the manufacturer this control of distortion and lateral chromatic aberration delivers a true 10 mm experience even without in-camera lens correction.

Minimum focusing distance is specified as 12 cm (4.72″) from the sensor plane with a maximum magnification of 0.24×. Venus Optics explicitly promotes this as wide-angle macro: a small subject filling the foreground while the entire surroundings stay in frame. The built-in 77 mm filter thread is far from a given on a 130° lens and accepts CPL and ND filters without adapter rigs.

Besides landscape and architecture, the manufacturer names panorama and astrophotography as key applications. The extremely wide field of view cuts down the number of frames needed for panoramas, and the f/2.8 aperture shortens night exposures before stars start to trail. The barrel measures Ø82 × 70.8 mm at 420 g according to the data sheet.

Factory versions according to Venus Optics: the lens is built in two variants. The 5-blade version offers autofocus on Sony FE and Nikon Z (manual only on Canon RF and L-mount). The 14-blade version offered here focuses manually on every mount and was designed for rounder bokeh and 14-point sunstars.
