Why a tripod collar matters in ultra macro
The Aksen lenses are long and comparatively heavy. If the combination is held by the camera tripod thread alone, the full weight of the lens acts as a lever on the bayonet. That not only stresses the mechanics, it causes a much more immediate problem in ultra macro work: vibration. At five to ten times magnification every tiny movement is magnified along with the subject, and even the ring-down after the shutter fires can ruin a frame.
The tripod collar moves the support point to where the centre of gravity actually is — onto the lens rather than the camera. The rig sits more steadily, the nose-down tilt disappears, and focus stacking sequences stay registered across many slices. The camera can also be rotated within the collar to switch between portrait and landscape without realigning the whole setup.
15 mm rods: the interface to your rig
Two rods in the 15 mm standard are supplied — the size commonly used for rod systems in film and video. Follow focus units, matte boxes, macro rails or lighting arms can all be mounted on them. This is particularly useful in macro photography with diffusers and flash arms, because the light is then rigidly connected to the lens and keeps its relative position whenever the setup is moved.

Build
All-metal construction in silver, machined to match the barrel diameter of the Aksen lenses. The collar is already included with the Cine versions of the Aksen lenses — for the photo versions it is offered separately.
Manufacturer data from Venus Optics
Venus Optics lists the tripod collar as official Aksen series accessory. The manufacturer’s reasoning: mounting the lens instead of the camera body on the tripod clearly improves weight distribution and balance of the whole setup. Unwanted vibration and accidental focus shifts are minimised – the prerequisite for genuinely sharp ultra macro shots and for cleanly repeatable focus stacking runs.
The official data sheets also explain why one collar fits both lenses: the 45mm f/2.8 1–5X measures Ø70.2 × 121 mm at 599 g, the 17.5mm f/1.7 5–10X Ø70.2 × 127.5 mm at 570 g. The barrel diameter of 70.2 mm is identical on both.
